Wonderful trip!

I was supposed to stay at this property, however rains came through and made that not possible. The hosts were very communicative and offered me the option of staying at another property nearby. The location is hands down one of the most beautiful areas I’ve been to. This kind of place isn’t for everyone, it’s like camping but with many great amenities like a refrigerator, stove, and warm water shower. I would love to visit again next year! I can’t say enough wonderful things about the property and the hosts, perfection!

Wonderful getaway and anniversary stay

We wanted a special weekend for our 37th anniversary and found it. Although this place may not be for everybody (no electricity or hot running water and an outhouse. It was spectacularly quiet and serene. We were able to hike with our dog all day through the canyon and the stars and Milky Way in the night sky were spectacular. The hosts were incredible. We indicated that it was our anniversary and had a bottle of Gruet champagne with chilled flutes in the refrigerator and were given 18 fresh eggs from their chickens. We were told to bring flashlights if we wanted to read at night. We like playing Scrabble after dinner and were able to get enough light using the oil lantern and our LED light for an enjoyable time. By the way our dog loved it.

The perfect off-the-grid romantic escape!

My husband and I went for my birthday and it was the perfect romantic get-away and completely off the grid. Andrew dropped us off on Saturday afternoon, and we didn't see another person (besides each other) until the following Saturday when he returned to take us out. I read 4 books, cover to cover, and slept whenever I wanted. We would hike in the morning, when it was cool and read (or sleep) in the toasty afternoons. On our second attempt, we made it to the Indian ruins (of the mysterious Gallina people) at the top of the western ridge and sat in the shade of the tumbled tower, watching the clouds and drinking in the breeze. It was magical. The Casita is rustic and comfortable, though it gets warm in the afternoons and evenings - best to stay out on the porch with the breeze, at least in July. The bed is comfy- not too hard, not too soft; the sheets are clean and crisp. The outdoor shower was exhilarating - I'd forgotten how sensual it is to stand naked in the outdoors - and No. 2 was far enough away that it didn't assault your nose at the cabin, but close enough that you could make it there in time even if you'd been holding your pee all night b/c you might be afraid of the dark, ahem. We saw lots of tracks of the critters that live in the canyon, heard coyotes howling, and shared our salad with the bunnies that live under the porch. We had one encounter with a rattlesnake hiking, very far from the Casita, but we all went our separate ways with no harm done. One night, there was a rock slide somewhere on the south canyon and the sound it made echoed all through the canyon. And the stars! There were so many they lit up the sky, even without the moon. I never got tired of listening to the absence of cars, and people. Although an occasional plane passed over the canyon, there was no other human-made sounds the entire week. The cicadas; the wind in the trees, the birds, the cows early in the morning and in the evening - that was the "racket" that assaulted us. On our last night there, it stormed with lots of thunder and lightening, wind and rain, and when we got up the next morning, the smell of sage was like perfume in the air. It was wonderful. My only upgrade would be Tabasco! If you need a break; if you've forgotten what it's like to be a human in a natural place, w/out electronics and gadgets or even a clock - go here. I want to go back again in the spring or the fall but I will never forget it. Thanks Andrew and Elizabeth!

Casita Ranch Cabin

Met by David promptly on arrival to show us around and explain the rules for the trash and no shoes in cabin as well as all the fine details. The cabin is very clean with plenty of plates , pots, and cups. The refrigerator is about 8 cu ft, plenty for our week long stay. We stayed in this cabin with hopes of exploring the many slot canyons around the ranch, it was wonderful. Absolutely a wonderful place to go hiking and exploring. We will go back again in our future and recommend to our friends.

We love this cabin deep in the heart of the Chama Wilderness. The eggs from the ranch's hens are beyond excellent. The bed is firm and comfortable, and Elizabeth thought of everything we might wish to have in the cabin. We will return next year.

Remote and exquisite high desert retreat

I had the singular pleasure of staying at the Remote Casita for two weeks towards the end of August 2017. It is truly a place unlike any other I have ever been to, and since I left, some part of me has been longing to go back. I chose the Casita for its remoteness and lack of internet, as a place to try and start writing again and to be alone with my thoughts and myself, and it was all that. However, it was also many wonderful and slightly miraculous things I did not count upon. One of these was how incredibly alive the canyon would be – a desert, but one full of plants and animals and insects of all kinds, living undisturbed in an ecological web that flowed seamlessly around the cabin and revealed itself to me in new ways each day. I loved walking the muddy streambed, which had just a little trickle of stream left in it, and watching the minnows dart around. It was also beautiful to watch sunset come, every day a little different, the sky turning first pale blue and white, then pink, then a deep purple that gave way to night. The moon was so bright that I had to wait for moonset to see the Milky Way against the cliffs above the cabin. For the first time in my life, I actually saw the moon changing phase as the days went by. I have never in my life felt more conscious of the natural rhythms of the planet and the landscape. The cabin was also perfect. Though I didn’t realize it before I came, it was the fulfillment of my childhood dream to live by myself in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. It had a beautiful little kitchen and an extremely comfortable bed, as well as a solar bag shower that worked remarkably well. Frying eggs using the grill on the front deck in the cool, misty morning air, as the sun rose over the hills and cliffs, remains one of my favorite memories, along with walking along the path to the outhouse in the last glow of sunset. (Yes, even the outhouse is exceptionally beautiful!) My hosts were also wonderful and I can’t think of anything they could have done to make for a better stay. David was great company on the drive in and out and provided me with fresh eggs, fruit, and veggies from the ranch’s farm, including a special delivery of more eggs and grapes halfway through my visit. Staying at the Remote Casita was an all-around wonderful experience. I hope I will have the opportunity to stay here again someday, and I am very grateful for the two weeks I had in this unique and precious place.

Heaven on Earth

This is one of the most special places on Earth. Remote, BEAUTIFUL, and one of a kind. The Casita was incredible. All the amenities you could possibly need plus more. The sleeping deck was a bonus and incredible views. This experience is for the right type of person. Off the grid, quiet, and self sufficient. We will return to stay at the the other 2 accommodations. Truly an Experience in Nature few would experience

Paradise

What can be better than staying in a beautiful canyon? No electricity, no wifi, no cell phone - nothing to distract you from the beauty of nature. Ah the mountains, the stars! The casita has everything you need to stay in comfort, the hosts have thought of everything you would want - the spice collection rivaled the one I have at home. I think this is, by far, my favorite place ever. Looking forward to coming back here again soon!

Peaceful and Restorative Oasis

The Casita is a peaceful and restorative oasis set perfectly in a sublime canyon of red rock cliffs. Rustic and simple, yet all the basic essentials to be comfortable are contained in the Casita. A wonderful place to unwind and unplug off the grid. Elizabeth, Andrew and David: Thank you for sharing a sliver of your little slice of heaven.

Fall stay at the Remote Wilderness Casita

I was fortunate to stay 3 nights at the Remote Wilderness Casita the first week of October. Everything I could have possibly needed was found in the cabin, not to mention the delicious eggs and fresh vegetables provided by the ranch. The mornings were chilly (25F), but the cabin was always cozy; I did not need to light the wood-burning stove. The bed was so comfortable I wanted to take it home with me! I did not use the solar shower, but heated water on the propane stove to take a "dish bath" every evening. For the first in memory, I was completely unplugged from work-related stress and entirely relaxed. I read, hiked, watched the stars, sang to the cattle and birds. The elk came down from the mountains , making sounds that resembled vocal exercises - and the cattle answered back. Thanks to my wonderful hosts! I want to come back for a week at the same time next year.

Well maintained, peaceful, comforting

My husband and I had an amazing week with our children (4 and 8 yrs old) at remote casita. Not once did the kids say they were bored. We instantly relaxed. Enjoyed daily hikes, water play, observing animals, games and crafts on the porch with amazing views, cooking, somores, star gazing, ghost stories, and so much more. It was priceless family time we will always remember. Our hosts were very welcoming and eager to share this amazing place.

Magical Place

We thoroughly enjoyed the pleasant cabin set in a beautiful and quiet canyon. Nature provided a spectacularly display of fall colors, crystal clear penetrating blue skies and billowing white clouds. The spectacular multicolored cliffs, diverse vegetation, and elevation changes provided great fall birding opportunities. The weather changed very quickly from clear skies to black threatening clouds, hail and lightning as we changed multiple times back and forth from shorts to down vests. The owners and David provided great service and the cabin has everything you need, just remember to bring proper clothing and rain gear if you are planning a long hike. Fresh heirloom vegetables from the ranch garden helped us create some great and creative meals. We highly recommend the cabin if you are seeking some quiet down time surrounded by natures beauty.

Joy

My wife and I (54 and 62 respectively) spent 3 glorious nights at the casita - would that it had been longer. The cabin is delightfully situated, intimate yet open, and very well appointed. There are queen beds inside and out - we slept out to see the stars. Our host, David (a delightful man), couldn't have been more welcoming. He took us around the garden, ate raspberries off the bush with us, provided eggs and vegetables, and gave us a thorough and storied orientation. We can't recommend this experience highly enough.

Anniversary adventure

My husband and I were looking for a romantic low key place to celebrate our first year of marriage and the remote casita did not disappoint!! This place is magical. It's like we stepped away from the world for 3 nights- my only regret being that we didn't have more time. Elizabeth made sure we had everything we needed, the fresh produce they provided was delicious and the view from the front porch at any time of day is incredible. If you're looking to get back to the basics, escape the craziness of work and everyday life, this is the place to do it.

Favorite place on the planet

I hesitate to write this, because I don't want a whole lot of people invading the area. For more than 30 years, my friends and I have backpacked all over the Jemez and the Chama area. One part we did not see was the Gallina Canyon because it is mostly private property. But now a couple of us have aged out of backpacking and when we found out that we could rent a casita in the canyon, we went for it. Perfect solitude, perfect beauty, and for former backpackers, luxurious accommodations. The eggs and veggies were a plus - and having a refrigerator allowed us to have real meals, not just trail food. There were so many places we wanted to hike to but we didn't have time, so we are planning to come back.

Incredible Country

Our four days at the remote casita were lovely! The property features incredible views, comfortable accommodations, and the owners are warm and welcoming. (They even provided fresh eggs and vegetables!) The weekend away was a wonderful excuse to shut off the cell phones and enjoy time reading, walking, and taking in the scenery. Our group could not have asked for a better place to stay and relax in a gorgeous natural setting!

Great!

I have spent a lot of time exploring New Mexico, and this was probably the most beautiful spot I have ever visited. We spent several great days hiking in the backcountry without seeing another person anywhere, and enjoyed evenings sitting on the porch looking out over the canyon floor. The casita was great, it was very comfortable especially considering how remote the location is. Elizabeth and Andrew were also great hosts, props to Andrew for getting us across a ridiculously tough road on the way back. We had a great experience, will be returning.

A Friendship Escape

This is my second time at the Remote Casita. The first time I brought my dad and stayed for three days and this time I stayed for 5 days. I really think it is important to stay for at least five days as you finally become totally relaxed. I took three of my good friends for the second trip and had an amazing time. The isolation, the views, and scenery are unrivaled--and the archaeology is absolutely amazing. The wonderful hosts did not forget a detail in stocking the cabin with extra accommodations. They are great folk with amazing land and I feel lucky that they are able to share it. Thank you Elizabeth and Andrew! P.S. they have the cutest puppies!

The best place to

My wife and I stayed here (with our dog) for our ten-year anniversary. The temperature was somewhere in the 90s the whole time, so we mostly sat on the front porch and took it easy. The mornings were beautiful and a little bit cooler. We got rain two of the three days we were here, and enjoyed watching the clouds roll in over the canyon walls. This is a magical little place to be when it rains. The rainwater tank, solar shower, propane stove, grill and fridge provided everything we needed to be comfortable. I'd recommend Remote Casita to anyone looking for a place to read, write, paint, meditate, do yoga, spend quality time with a partner or enjoy some solitude.

A Respite For The Soul

My wife and I just spent several days in the Ranch Casita. It was raining when we got there and had been for most of the day. Due to bad road conditions Andrew and Elizabeth (the owners) met us at the beginning of the ranch road where we left our car until the next day. When we got to the casita it was late in the evening. The waning day was drizzly, cold, and grey and my wife was not sure that I had made a good decision in choosing this place. She was not very happy. I was discouraged because she was not happy. The next day dawned with a beautiful blue sky, birds chirping outside, and pleasant temperatures. In this new light we realized that the casita was beautifully appointed, quite quaint, and comfortable. The new day brought a whole new attitude and appreciation for this amazing place. This is a small, active ranch eight miles from the nearest power line. It is not a "dude ranch". It is really a retreat spot for the mind and the spirit. Just sitting out on the front deck and soaking up the sun and the view was rejuvenating. We would drive back down the lane a little ways and just explore the land and the edge of the creek. It was unbelievably peaceful and relaxing. A couple of nights we went back down the lane to a big open area and stretched lawn chairs out to watch the sky. Breathtaking. I would do my morning meditation and contemplative silence on the sleeping deck up in the brush behind the casita. The silence (except for some peaceful chickens and the occasional lowing of a cow) and the sense of a caring presence was extremely moving. If you are a person or a couple that longs to spend some time in the presence of a loving and powerful Creator, that longs to get away from the myriads of distractions- electronic and otherwise- that abound in today's world; then I cannot recommend this place enough. It moved our heart- the place and the people. On a lighter note, when the owners tell you that the lane is impassable because of rain...believe them and when the sign says "No Vehicles Beyond This Point"...heed it. My wife, who wasn't real happy at first when we got there, cried when we left.

Absolute Heaven In Northern New Mexico

If you need to totally unplug alone or with your significant other, this is the place. Located about 2 hours north of Santa Fe, NM, reached by dirt road on the last 15 or so miles, you are taken to a remote casita which is located in a box canyon along the Rio Gallina. The casita is about 5 miles from the owners ranch, has no cell phone service or electricity and is, in my humble opinion, the true definition of "glamping". You have a solid roof over your head, a propane heater if you need it, a 3 burner propane stove and a medium refrigerator/freezer. There is no hot water but there is a solar outdoor shower and a separate toilet under a lean-to nestled in the pines. This is a step above tent camping but without neighbors and you have protection from the elements. You are driven across the river about a dozen times by the owner before you get to the casita which, by the way, welcomes dogs. This is part of a working farm so there may be some cows in the area. The casita sits on a hill, backed up to a wall of rock that is about 500 feet high before it reaches the Gallina Mesa. The casita faces south, having all day sun once it clears the Mesa behind you. We stayed 5 nights and couldn't have been happier. We thought we'd do some hiking but there had been spring rains that prevented us from crossing the river. Ended up being just fine. The dogs roved all over, slept like crazy and we read, walked, slept, photographed everything in sight, I knitted, took my drawing materials and got inspiration. There is a queen bed and 2 singles on the front porch. The linens are provided, as is the dinnerware, cooking utensils and linen. All you need to bring is whatever food you need and necessities for your stay. The nights, when the sky is clear, is breathtaking- clear views of the Milkey Way and more stars than you can imagine. This northern New Mexico casita is perfect for anyone seeking solitude, inspiration or a healthy dose of down time. The owners are quite responsive and punctual with correspondence and leave you to your own devices throughout your stay. There are very good pictures on their website under "Remote Casita."

Wish we could have stayed longer!

It's hard to find words or photos that can accurately capture the beauty of the "Remote Casita." This place is truly a refuge. There is no electricity, so you can fully check-out and relax; the hosts (Elizabeth and Andrew) provide every necessity conceivable while you are there. Highlights include the colorful outhouse, which provides gorgeous views of the canyon with a tree trunk to rest your feet, and the wood burning stove / grill. They provide eggs from the farm, which are hands-down the most delicious we've had, with neon orange happy yokes. The day hikes were spectacular. The farm itself is impeccably run, with the happiest animals around. Elizabeth, Andrew and David were extremely accommodating to ensure we had a wonderful stay, even amidst unpredictable weather. Would recommend to anyone who loves the outdoors / hiking / backpacking. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Absolute Heaven

This is the perfect place to get away from absolutely everyone for whatever time you reserve the casita for. There is no electricity or cell phone service. This is the time to do that interior work you've always said you needed to do, or write the draft for that novel or screenplay, wander the box canyon, draw, paint or photograph whatever inspiration you see or feel around you, observe nature, read, sleep, count the endless stars in the sky and curse the moon for turning on so much light that the stars are hard to see ... but wait - the moon has set and there's the Milkey Way! And the double rainbows that appear after the rain. So glorious and it takes life back to something so simple. This is glamping in the truest sense of the word. Camping but with 4 walls, a roof, propane space heater, 3 burner propane stove, medium refrigerator/freezer, dinnerware, flatware, drinkware, linens, queen bed inside and 2 singles on the front porch. Just take your food and necessities. There is cold running water, a solar shower and toilet under a lean-to tucked into the pines. It has only what you absolutely need with no frillsDon't bother if you don't like to be alone or uninterrupted with your significant other. This is where you go so you get to know each other, or yourself, again. It's a real gift.
