À propos de cet hébergement

Last Hurrah, deuxième maison

Bring food and anything you'd like to drink beside water. No stores out here.
The road is mostly dirt. Normally you won't need four wheel drive but you will need six or so inches of ground clearance. SUVs, Jeeps, trucks.
If height an issue there will be issues up and down Hurrah Pass on the way here. I’m about 17 miles from Moab and it takes most about an hour.

Epic adventure!
If you are looking for a Vrbo that is spa like, lacking adventure or find yourself high maintenance, then this place is not for you. If you are looking for epic views, a rustic charm, a quirky owner who loves to tell stories, and don’t mind a little red dust, then this is for you. The “road” or more like a path, to this location is definitely not for your mini-van or sedan. You will most certainly need a 4x4. There are switch backs, loose rocks and cliffs. There are not many, if any places to turn around. Tom, the owner, drives it at night but most people would not want to. On the drive out, it took us 1 hr 30 minutes in a Jeep. We were greeted by Tom who escorted us to our house with his little shadow Jax, his loving dog that won’t leave his side. The property had all the basic home essentials like towels, bedding, pillows, cook wear, utensils, grill, bug sprays, fans, etc. Tom gave us a hand-drawn map of the area to get to the wind-caves. We had walkie talkies available to communicate with him if needed. Of note: we starting thinking we were having a sewage problem, but turns out we just bumped the knobs on the oven and we’re releasing natural gas. They were extremely sensitive and after that we were hyper vigilant to not bump them. There are nightly hotdog feedings to wild raccoons, skunks and foxes. They just show up! There is a tortoise on property that gets fed. -bring all your food. -fill up your tank -bring your free spirit and sense of adventure

Off the grid paradise
Where do I start. Everything about this location and the accommodation was awesome. Yes, it’s a little challenging to get to, but totally worthwhile! We rented a jeep and that was an appropriate vehicle…ground clearance is key. The small, separate house we stayed in was great for 2 adults, 1 child. Kitchen was well stocked, we brought in all of our own food which is necessary because once you’re there you want to stay put. There are endless hikes, scrambling on rocks and great adventuring around the area. Don’t miss wind caves. Tom the owner is a delight. Very communicative. We couldn’t get over the scenery. You won’t need to go to Canyonlands Park if you stay here. We can’t wait to go back.

Great adventure with the kids!
My 4 kids and I had a great time! It was quite the adventure. The drive over Hurrah Pass was awesome! Tom was great and super communicative. All the amenities that we needed were provided. We rented his Polaris Ranger for 2 days. If you have kids, I would highly recommend spending some time at the wind caves exploring (bring headlights). There is so much hiking that can be done right from the property. Epic disc golf course, too. We typically do not do the same trip twice, but we would definitely like to plan a return trip here. Thanks again for everything Tom!

Unique Getaway
My wife, our 9 mos old daughter and I had a great time staying at the Basecamp, yes the road out there is a little long and rough, it takes an hour to get to Moab, about 15 miles of rougher road, but totally worth it and part of the experience, We drove it in a jeep but a van or Subaru would be fine. Once you get out there all the accommodations are there, the place is pretty cool and surrounded by awesome Moab views, don’t forget to check out the stars and Milky Way at night! Tom knows the area and can help get you lined out with places to check out if interested. We would definitely stay again,

Fantastic Getaway
You really can't beat the location of this property if you are looking for something that highlights central Utah. Lots of fun hikes around, epic disc golf courses, unique landscape, and the property is very comfortable. Tom is great and is an excellent resource on the area. The drive is exciting but was very doable in a stock SUV with street tires.

Magic in Moab
Wow, what an incredible weekend at Last Hurrah! By far the most unique stay I have ever experienced. The home is so well crafted and the balcony looking over the Colorado river and red rocks makes for beautiful sunsets and overall incredible views. The hosts, Tom and Collin, were super helpful and communicative. They provided detailed directions/suggestions for driving to the home and making the most of the activities provided by the land - which are endless. The hosts allowed us to use their side by side to explore otherwise unreachable locations, we kayaked down the Colorado river, the hiking is unmatched and there is absolutely zero light pollution at night. Best star gazing I or my partner have ever seen. The drive in is a little rough, but it’s part of the experience. It also is the reason you can explore National park-type land without the crowds. 10/10 recommend this spot to anybody who enjoys desert life. We will be making a trip back this summer and can’t wait!

Dangerous Drive No AC No Certified clean water
The Hurrah Pass road is not maintained by anyone. It is an off road, rutted, rocked, sandy trap. I was lucky to get out alive and in one piece. Owner portrays it as a hard pack easily driving road. This is not true. We could not turn back as after we got half way due to darkness coming. We left early next day. It took 3 hours to drive. I had to have my friend scout the road to see how deep the rock ruts were. We had to maneuver around rocks, ruts and drop offs. This is the desert in summer. 100degrees. Property was over 90 degrees inside. The AC does not work. It is a swamp cooler that roared all night. The windows in both bedrooms are inoperable. This is NOT Air Conditioning. The water in tap is from Colorado River and not drinkable. The water provided was from unknown source and stored outside in dusty gerry cans . This is not in the listing . We got full refund. VRBO is no help. They wash their hands. Check the fine print. It is up to owner. At first he was not going to refund. We contacted credit card too . Lost 2 days of our trip on this misrepresented property.

This has to be one of the most fulfilling experiences I've ever had. The remote location and vast landscapes are absolutely breathtaking. Once in a Lifetime
The drive down Hurrah Pass was the scariest thing I’ve ever done in my life. (we made it in a Buick Enclave, but every single person we passed laughed at us 😂) but once we reached the property it was totally worth it! The property was beautiful, the porch and views were amazing!! The stars at night were like nothing I’ve seen, we could see the Milky Way and multiple shooting stars each night. Tom was great and gave us experienced advice, on his recommendation we took the UTV in the evening and we had Wind Caves and Chicken Corners to ourselves. I wish we could have stayed longer.

A Trip of a LIFETIME
We as family sat on the porch of the property and came up with words to describe our trip: extraordinary, epic, ancient/time travel, spiritual, fascinating, pushing limits, and phenomenal. The house was clean and provided everything we needed for our trip out there. We were able to cool down between hikes and jeep rides. The scenery is a million dollar view. Every day we would wake up and couldn't believe we were in between mesa and next to the Colorado River. Tom was a phenomenal host. Every place he told us to hike was worth it. We kept saying, "if Tom tells us to go there we will not be disappointed." I would highly suggest a Jeep rental. We avoided wear and tear on our own vehicle and had the ability to go wherever we wanted without worry. There were some tears from my twelve year old when we left. We are definitely going back next summer.

The drive to Tom’s place was an adventure, just as we were looking for. The views were gorgeous and the place was amazing. Excellent place to tune out...property is enough just to explore but we also took our bikes plus used a sidebyside to the Wind Caves. The “road” and Hurrah Pass are not for the faint, and 4x4 with clearance would definitely be my recommendation. The house was clean and just as advertised. Amazing vacation
Came into Moab to escape the Idaho snow. It was just what we were looking for, peace and quiet. We took out the UTV for the day and went to the wind caves with our three dogs, who are used to riding in them on our ranch. We saw lots of great birds including a northern harrier in the field below the cabin. Amazing views & a landscape that is full of magic. Tom was a great host. This is truly a one of a kind retreat.

This was a great place to unplug and relax. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It is a bit further out from Moab than we anticipated, so harder to get to some Jeep trails we were going to do, but there was also a lot to enjoy nearby the rental. Thank you to Tom for being a great host and offering so many choices on site for activities and recommendations. We particularly enjoyed the wildlife! Great place to stay!!

Location was spectacular and property is amazing for outdoor lovers. The road to get there is tough. DO NOT DRIVE THERE AT NIGHT! The recommendation that 4x4 is needed is an understatement. The drive is along a rocky cliff that if you cant see, you will drive off the cliff. Howver bottom line is its 100% worth it.

A place like no other!
This is an amazing property if you really want to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful Utah desert/canyon surroundings. The house was actually much nicer than the pictures represented--with a beautiful patio and spectacular view. Unbelievable hiking right from the property, access to side-by-side 4x4 for exploring super cool areas nearby (WindCaves and Chicken Corner), and kayaks for enjoying the river, that's just steps away. But the best part is Tom--the property owner and canyon lands expert. He was supremely responsive in our booking and prepping for the trip--gave great advice on what to see on our way down (in Arches and Canyonlands)--and was always immediately on hand if we needed anything onsite. (you get walkie talkies when you arrive, b/c there's no cell signal) He even served as our personal guide on a few amazing hikes--taking us on trails we never would have guessed were trails to see gorgeous rock formations and canyons. He has no shortage of great stories of his time owning Base Camp--and we called him Cinderfella b/c of his relationship with all the woodland creatures on his property. Bring everything you need--b/c you're not going to want to go over that pass more than once. (my Lexus 450H SUV made it, but it was very dicey at points--and several vehicles we saw didn't make it. Next time I'll rent a Jeep and not beat my own car up)

Very Special destination on the Colorado River / Utah wilderness
What a great spot. You can just feel the magic of the area. Beautiful vistas and plenty of things to do with the river, hiking, jeeping and sites nearby. I brought my kids and grandkids to stay here during a ten day stay in April 2019. Weather was beautiful and they loved exploring the rock formations, lizards and of course the resident tortoise, Kobae, right out the front door. The kids loved the Wind Caves also, just down the road. Tom was a perfect host. Made me feel right at home and was ready at anytime to answer questions, or provide anything I had forgotten and even provided a walkie talkie for communication. What a nice guy! The home I rented, the last Hurrah lower house, was well furnished, comfortable beds, kitchen was well outfitted and had a great outdoor porch area for hanging out to read a book, with fire pit and star gazing at night I would definitely come here again. Loved meeting Michele and Jax too! Thanks for sharing!

Just a nice guy who knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties, one day, my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place 18 years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we may have mosquitoes for a while until the bats and swallows take care or them. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use. Four hours and plenty of time to get to the Wind Caves and Chicken Corner. $195 cash or check. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
