Truly a fairytale town! Absolutely was thrilled with this quaint rental !! A perfect combination of history with modern conveniences. The place was very clean and had all the cooking tools we needed. Loved the rooftop Terrace! Beautiful sunsets in a peaceful location. Friendly neighbors during the stay made it so pleasant as well! I felt this charming place was a perfect get away for me! All you could hope for

We spent a terrific week at Chrstine’s Lovely property. The house really does have everything you could hope for and we really enjoyed our week of self catering. There are lots of great towns and villages within the radius of an hour by car. The one thing we missed was aircon since our visit coincided with a 43C heatwave. The peace and quiet of Assignan was a balm for the soul.

Enchanting & magical

It was more than we could have dreamt of as far as charm, comfort and truly a magical place to stay! Besides the house, the town, had so many places to hike, bike, walk and explore history with a delightful true country beauty. there were a few lovely looking places to eat, although we preferred the charm of the kitchen and cooking. The terrace has a stunning view and you felt like you were in heaven looking over such magical landscape. I can't WAIT to go back! I would HIGHLY recommend this place, because like us you won't want to leave, and you'll be planning on how soon to get back there!

La Belle Ancienne - a perfect home in the most gorgeous setting...

From start to finish our week at this incredible property was simply a delight in every way. Christine (the owner) was brilliant to be in touch with, giving us some fantastic recommendations for local markets, eateries and local wine producers. The house itself is perfect - with fabulous facilities but still retaining all it's charm and wonderfully clean and well presented. The village of Assignan is quiet and peaceful but surrounded by vineyards and with 3 restaurants there is plenty of amazing food and wine to enjoy and everyone is so friendly. We found some beautiful walks nearby and were blessed with great weather for the whole time we were there - the Languedoc lends itself to the sun... so beautiful. The whole area is steeped in so much history, which we loved... Cathar country... and there is a fantastic array of guides and maps at La Belle Ancienne to get you started. We had the best week away, I cannot recommend this property more highly.

In one word....CHARMING

Looking at the picture makes me want to return and I just got home a week ago! My travel companion and I stayed at La Belle for 3 weeks and we both had a wonderful experience. The house was furnished and equipped with anything/everything that we would possibly need or want. The night we arrived there was a wonderful bottle of local wine waiting for us. Slept great every night in the quiet, tranquil village of Assignan. We took local bike rides around the surrounding countryside and villages, enjoyed the local outdoor open markets in St. Chinian, enjoyed cooking many nights in the very well equipped kitchen, and then eating up on the rooftop. Listening to the surrounding sounds, the birds chirping, the church bell chimes, etc. were all very quaint and the aromas of the restaurants wafting up the Rue all made for a very sensual experience. It was truly a pleasant vacation!! We also were in a good location to take daily road trips to Carcassonne, Montepelier, Beziers, the Canal de Midi, etc. So much to see in the Languedoc!

Lovely property with French charm

Chris provided me with all the information I would need before I arrived making the arrival smooth, with no problems. My travel partner and I arrived to a local bottle of wine awaiting us, which he could not open fast enough. Instantly we felt comfortable at Chris' charming home. It was equipped with everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked dinners often, and then ate on the rooftop. This is such a great central location for bike riding, hiking, day road trips, kayaking, village hopping, weekly Markets, dining, wineries, ....so much to offer. I would definitely return and see more!! but this kept us busy for the month!

Absolutely charming - loved it.

We were delighted with the standard of accommodation at La Belle Ancienne. Everything was there for a comfortable and memorable stay. We were attending a wedding in Assignan and it was a joy to return each evening after a full day's activities and just relax.

Absolutely unforgettable! Amazing accommodations

Amazing, unique villa in Assignan. Close to St. Chinian which has a grocery store and anything else you may need. The villa was inviting, beautifully decorated and incredibly comfortable! Easy to find with ample parking. The wood stove heats the entire place and is gorgeous at that. The bathroom has heated floors! I honestly can recommend this place with beyond five stars. It was truly an unforgettable experience and the hosts were over the top accommodating. I will be back!!

Wonderful Getaway in the Languedoc!

Charming house just steps away from nice, local restaurants. Five to ten minute drive to farmer's and craft market twice a week. Many historical sites including castles and ancient towns nearby. My wife, daughter and I loved our stay! We prepared many tasty meals with the wonderful produce we purchased at the market and found many gifts for friends there as well. When not cooking for ourselves, we visited various restaurants in the area. Great food and friendly local folks to chat with! La Cite Castle in Carcassonne and the ancient town of Minerve were amazing! Many wonderful memories! I would recommend a visit to Assignan and La Belle Ancienne to anyone! We will definitely be back on our next trip to Europe!

Charming townhouse in rural village!

Very charming house in center of the village of Assignan. Very remote this time of year but great area for walks and bucolic views from the rooftop patio of the fall vineyards, huge bird migrations and for us, the super moon rising over the horizon. Good restaurants in town, surprisingly good for such a small village. Stay was warmed by cozy fire on the cool evenings.

Great place to stay when visiting the Langeudoc

This was our second stay at La Belle. The two of us stayed there with our adorable but slightly insane Fox Terrier. The latest improvements made to the place are great. The place offers all the comfort and privacy you need if you simply want to relax in peace and quiet, and yet there is a tapas bar and Thai restaurant within about 50 feet of the front door. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with great walks in the wine farms, hills and forests. Assignan is well placed as the Languedoc beaches are an easy drive away, as well as the cities of Beziers, Narbonne and Carcassonne. We are sure to be going again.

LA BELLE

La Belle is a wonderful charming house! We arrived on Sunday and Manuel the neighbour received us very very nice. He showed us the house and explained everything, about the surroundings, the daily baker who peeps his horn everyday except Monday at the market place at about nine in the morning. La Belle is so nice renovated, that you feel like home in a minute. There is all you need, nothing is missing. The bedrooms, there are two of them, are very comfortable and nice decorated. In the kitchen you finde everything you need and more. The terrace invites you to spend time there in the evening to drink a bottle of a good regional glas of rose wine! You see in everything that the owner loves La Belle and spend a lot of time there! The next city where you can find what you need is St. Chinian. It's about 20 minutes to go. Two days a week there is a market place where you can get fish, vegetables, fruits, meet, clothes soaps and so on. In any case if you love to swim you have to go to Roquebrun, along the river L'ORB there are a lot places to go swimming and to lay in the sun! Absolutely marvellous! The city of Assignan is very clean, little and nice. A place to calm down, you will see! Thank you Christine for spending our holiday in your wonderful lovely house! Hope we can come again!

Summer 2015

La Belle is a wonderful charming house! We felt like at home in one minute! There is everything you need. The bedrooms are big and lovely created. You see that the owner loves the house and loves to spend time at La Belle. The surrounding is lovely and very clean. A bigger city is reachable in 20 minutes where two days a week a market takes place. At Roquebrun (about 40 minutes to go) there is a river called L'ORB where you can swim! An absolutely must! We will come back! Thank you sooooo much, Christine

Two thumbs up for La Belle Ancienne!!

Two thumbs up for La Belle Ancienne!! Upon our arrival to La Belle Ancienne we were struck with the beauty of the house. The exterior original stone restoration is absolutely stunning! Once inside the house we found everything we needed and more. The furniture was comfortable, attractive, and beckoned us to nestle in and stay awhile. The kitchen was well-equipped with nice touches like copper pans for cooking, both a coffee maker and french press pot, an assortment of cutting knives and baskets holding little things (like cloth napkins) that made me feel right at home. The little things didn't end with the kitchen. We found plush bath towels, super nice cotton bed linens, and top grade pillows that don’t make your neck ache. These are the details that make a difference for me especially when staying somewhere for a week or more. The roof terrace was a little piece of heaven with great views and sun-drenched tiles that made sitting out into the evenings a must do and quite comfortable. We hiked the village and surrounding area and found the first of the spring asparagus that, of course, made its way into an evening meal. Rosemary bushes were everywhere and so fragrant --a simple brush up against one fills the air with the scent of fresh rosemary! What I especially liked about Assignan was the views. The Pyrenees could be seen in the distance and in one place, near the village, I could see the sea. I don’t often return to places I have already been given I like to have new experiences, meet different people, see new things but I must admit, I will return to La Belle as it met all of our expectations and the listing descriptions were spot on. The property was clean and well maintained, the owner quick to answer questions and she went above and beyond in accommodating our booking. La Belle Ancienne is a place that beckons you back with its comfort and laid-back atmosphere. That said, a resounding 2 Thumbs Up and 5 Stars for this little gem!

The trip of a lifetime: Southern France

Mon Dieu! What a trip! My wife, her sister and husband, my brother and his wife, and my sister stayed at La Belle (and Ernst's place across the street) for two weeks last fall. Such fun! This gite is located in the oldest part of this ancient town—narrow streets, stone shuttered houses, inviting secret alleys. It's a very charming setting. The new wine and tapas bar is at the end of the block. We were fortunate enough to arrive on the night of their “closing for the season” party. The owners, employees, and other villagers made us feel so welcome. They filled us with free, amazing wine (Castigno – thank you, Marc) and tried to get us dinner reservations (patchy phone service!). We found the people of the village, and the area in general, very warm and welcoming. Our French is elementary at best, but we were never made to feel awkward. Whether getting gas or bread or asking about a dish or wine, the people were so lovely and accommodating. The village also has a number of domaines (wineries). Be sure to schedule a tasting at Sacre Couer (with Luc) or Quatre Sous just outside of town. This is wine country, and in our travels we passed hundreds of inviting domaines throughout the area. It was harvest time, so it was a busy time for the vineyards. We saw fields filled with pickers and trailers brimming with grapes on their way to becoming wine. The next closest larger town, St. Chinian, is an entertaining 15-minute drive away and is home to a nice supermarket, gas stations, boulangeries, cafes, boucheries, and a twice weekly outdoor market. Don't miss the markets. We would stock up on amazing food—olives, tapenades, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, magnificent cheeses, bread, and prepared food too (paella, rotisserie poultry and pork) .We found great souvenirs and gifts at the outdoor markets and at the nearby olive oil factory. We would shop in the morning, tour in the afternoon, and then retire to La Belle's rooftop terrace to watch the sun set and drink the day's wine and graze the night away. It only rained twice while we were there—we found La Belle's big oak table the perfect place to gather inside. That's where we would breakfast and plan out our day's travels. There are plenty of great nearby destinations. Try visiting Roquebrun and its botanic gardens; then drive up the Orb Valley to the gorges of Heric; visit LaGrasse and its beautiful abbey; Olargues is perched on a hill, walk its winding medieval streets, then hike outside of town on chestnut lined

sweet village house

What a lovely little house, and set in a lovely little village too. Owner Christine has overlooked nothing to make a guest feel welcomed, from the bottle of local wine to her recommendations for local dining and activities. The house is a lovely and authentic townhouse equipped with a very complete kitchen, and the other outstanding feature is the roof terrace. The place just feels so relaxing and warm, it was a pleasure to take it all in. Evenings were just right for a fire in the wood burning stove, and days were filled with trekking around the area and exploring some of the nearby castle ruins. There are so many interesting and unique things to find and places to see - two weeks was certainly too short a stay! I would highly recommend LaBelle Ancienne to anyone who would like to experience the south of France far from the madding crowds.

I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US - in Washington State - where the land is lush but completely opposite from the sunny climate in southern France. I wear many hats - most of them connecting to the arts (musician, composer, audio engineer, graphic artist and gardener).

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

Being a musician allows me the freedom to travel extensively on my own time and initially provided the impetus to find this lovely retreat in the south of France. The people here are so warm and friendly; the language is beautiful; the scenery is spectacular; the history is amazing; the food superb... I could go on and on!
I chose Assignan because of its tranquility. The village, which sits high on a hill, has an energy that I find easy to create in. I can understand why some of the great artists came to the Languedoc - it is a magical place indeed.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

When stepping outside the house you only need to walk a few minutes to be in the beauty of the countryside; the many vineyards that surround Assignan go in every direction. You can find dolmens and other ancient artifacts along your journey whilst catching a spectacular view of the Pyrenees or Montagne Noire.
The village itself boasts several 'caves' - some organically produced.
